Greenhouse Grower’s 2024 Top 100 Growers: The Complete List
Last year at this time, when we were conducting our Top 100 Growers survey, many growing operations told us that while they did not grow in size in 2023, they were planning for growth, in some cases significant, headed into 2024.
The numbers in our 2024 Top 100 Growers report certainly reflect this. More than 25% of the growers on this year’s list saw an uptick in square footage, and several are capitalizing on this growth by investing in automation systems, as well as their team.
But the market is also facing headwinds, some of them internal and some dictated by external market forces. As a result, this year’s Top 100 Growers list is missing a few names: Dan Schantz Greenhouses in Pennsylvania, White’s Nursery and Greenhouses in Virginia, Panzer Nursery in Oregon, and Skagit Horticulture in Washington.
You can learn more about Skagit’s circumstances on page 8. In fact, throughout this issue, you can find insights on why having an exit plan is critical, how to stay financially resilient, and more.
The complete Top 100 Growers list for 2024 is below. You can also find the slideshow in a unique “countdown” format here.
Mergers and Acquisitions Also Trending
Every year, certain trends emerge from the biggest greenhouse growers in the country. It may be a rise in the H-2A program, or a more diverse product portfolio with the addition of perennials or houseplants, for example. This year, the trend is clear — mergers and acquisitions.
One of the latest examples is how Dan and Jerry’s Greenhouses, #19 on Greenhouse Grower’s 2023 Top 100 Growers list, acquired the Harrisonville, MO, range of Bela Flor Nurseries on Feb. 28, according to Dan and Jerry’s CEO Mike Vallafskey. This acquisition will add 28.5 acres of greenhouse space and 12 acres of outdoor irrigated space to Dan and Jerry’s operation.
“Strategically it made sense for us to expand into the central Midwest corridor of the U.S. Operationally, it brings many synergies to Dan and Jerry’s,” Vallefskey says. “The proximity to our customer base was ideal, and we had been looking to expand existing ranges and build or acquire additional properties, so the timing was excellent.”
This acquisition takes place among several other recent closures and acquisitions, including Costa Farms’ acquisition of Battlefield Farms in Rapidan, VA. Costa Farms is No. 1 on Greenhouse Grower’s Top 100 Growers list and Battlefield was No. 31 on the same list. Jose “Joche” Smith, CEO of Costa Farms, says Costa’s team recommitted to growing the business in 2023, and found similarities with the leadership team at Battlefield Farms.
“We’re very like-minded with their ownership. It’s a hard-working family that really likes taking care of their people, and they’re absolutely committed to developing a great team,” Smith says. “I feel like I could be talking to any of the people on the senior Costa team when I’m talking to Bobby (Van Hoven) or his brother Anthony and their father Jerry. They’re always willing to look at a better way of doing things, and I appreciate that.”
