Video of the Week: Exploring the Opportunities of Augmented Reality in Greenhouses

Greenhouse Grower occasionally highlights a video that shines a spotlight on the controlled-environment industry, from crop protection advice to insider views on plant production at greenhouse operations across the country. Have you recently produced a video that you want us to highlight? Virtual reality (VR) is a relatively known quantity outside of the scientific community due to its application in entertainment products, largely video games. Although recently, many companies have pushed to integrate it into general lifestyle and workspace practices, such as with this year’s launch of the Apple Vision Pro.

However, lesser known is the technological application of augmented reality (AR), which is essentially a compromise between VR and the real world. As technology, AR superimposes computer-generated imagery onto the view of real-world objects for a more detailed and expanded view. Probably the most famous examples (so far) are that of Pokémon GO and Google Glass.

That leads us to today’s video, which shows the Greenhouse Horticulture business unit of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) explaining the actions and purpose of a recently completed project. Using the HoloLens 2, the project explored the potential and opportunities of applying augmented reality technology towards greenhouse work, including the visualization of climate data and stress detection.
